How To Use LinkedIn’s New Dynamic UTM Parameters

One of the most exciting recent updates in Campaign Manager is the launch of Dynamic UTM parameter building. For advertisers who care about tracking (and we all should), this change is a major win.

What dynamic UTMs do

With this feature, you can now set your UTM parameters once at the account level, and LinkedIn will automatically apply them to your ads. That means:

  • No more manually adding UTMs to every destination URL
  • Consistent tracking across campaigns and ads
  • Less room for error in reporting

You can combine static UTMs (like utm_source=linkedin) with dynamic variables that Campaign Manager inserts automatically, such as:

  • Campaign name
  • Account name
  • Campaign ID
  • Ad ID

The limitations to watch out for

Before celebrating too much, there are a few restrictions you should know:

  • UTMs are only applied to the main destination URL, not to other links within your ad.
  • Dynamic UTMs do not work for Thought Leader Ads or boosted company posts.
  • If you want tracking at the individual ad level, the only native option is the Creative ID.

At B2Linked, we like to track every ad with unique parameters, so we still add manual identifiers at the ad level. But if your reporting only needs to go down to the campaign level, LinkedIn’s dynamic UTMs will save you significant time.

Key takeaway

Dynamic UTMs are a huge step forward for LinkedIn Ads tracking. They reduce manual setup, ensure consistency, and make campaign-level reporting seamless. Just be aware of the current limitations and keep manual tagging for ad-level granularity.
