How to Manage Billing and Budgets for LinkedIn Ads Like a Pro

When it comes to running LinkedIn Ads, setting the right billing method and budget controls can save a lot of headaches—especially for the finance team.

Here’s how we approach it.

Billing options on LinkedIn Ads

By default, when we create a new ad account, LinkedIn asks the billing admin to enter a credit card. Once added, LinkedIn will automatically charge it:

  • Every time spend accumulates to $100–$200
  • Or, if spend is low, on an arbitrary date for whatever is owed at that point

While this works fine for smaller campaigns, it can frustrate finance teams—because these irregular charges often don’t match what’s shown in Campaign Manager, making reconciliation messy.

Moving to monthly invoicing

If we’re spending multiple thousands of dollars per month for 3–4 consecutive months, we can apply for invoicing.

How invoicing works
  • LinkedIn connects to our bank account via wire or ACH transfer
  • We receive a single invoice once per month
  • The invoice matches exactly what was spent during that month

This makes tracking and reconciliation much easier, especially for larger accounts.

Budget controls inside Campaign Manager

LinkedIn offers two main options for budgeting:

  1. Daily budget – Set a maximum per day
  2. Total budget – Set a lifetime cap for the campaign

We can also combine them. We prefer daily budgets because we monitor accounts every day. However, there’s a catch:

LinkedIn allows itself to spend up to 50% over the daily budget.

That means if our daily limit is $100, spend could reach $150 in a day—so we need to watch closely and adjust budgets if this happens regularly.

Key takeaways

  • Use credit card billing for smaller accounts, invoicing for larger ones
  • Track spend daily, even if you’re using total budgets
  • Be aware of the 50% daily budget overage rule
  • Apply for invoicing if monthly reconciliation is a priority
